George Washington Masonic National Memorial
George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a Masonic temple and museum located in Alexandria, Virginia. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of George Washington, the first U.S. President and a Freemason. The monument, built between 1922 and 1932, is situated on Shooters Hill overlooking the Potomac River.
It started as a project of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association, which was founded in 1910. The association purchased the property in 1919, and construction began in 1922. The monument was completed in 1932 and dedicated on May 12, 1932.
George Washington played an important role in the development of Freemasonry in America. He was initiated into a lodge in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1752 and later served as the Master of his lodge. He also helped to establish a Grand Lodge in Philadelphia in 1781, which became the governing body for Freemasonry in America.
