When you think about your diet, usually the first thing you think of is your overall health and your weight. While this may be true, few of us realize how much your diet affects your oral health and your teeth. For example, a diet that contains significant amounts of sugar, high fructose corn syrup or artificial food and flavors can be devastating to your oral health. That being said, your oral health and your body greatly depend on a steady, healthy diet.
You may not have time or money to consult with a nutritionist and plan and prep your meals daily. The majority of us are so busy with work and raising a family that this may not even be an option to consider. So, we have made a list of dietary items that you can easily add to your daily diet that will not only help your oral health but your overall health as well.
- Lean Meats
- Meats such as chicken, beef, turkey and fish are all excellent sources of proteins that both your body and teeth can benefit from. When picking out chicken or turkey in the grocery store, make sure to pick out chicken or turkey that is 100% natural. When picking out beef, specifically ground beef, make sure to pick out meat that contains at least 92% lean content. All fish is great for your teeth as just about all of it is very lean, and it also contains vitamins and oils that your smile can use to be brilliant.
- Antioxidants
- Antioxidants are a great choice for cleaning out your body and ridding it of unnecessary toxins. Try adding an assortment of berries such as blueberries, and strawberries as they are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that your mouth will use to fight off bacteria and benefit from its healing abilities.
- Tea
- Specifically black and green teas have contents that have been proven to slow and even stop the growth of bacteria in your mouth. So, in the morning, try swapping out your needed cup of coffee with a cup of tea. Of course, limit the amount of cream and sugar that you put in your tea as too much of either would be counterproductive.
